ups and downs

busy weekend this weekend-- on Saturday I attended part of the NCPA (NC Psychiatric Association) meeting in Wrightsville Beach. It was beautiful weather,an interesting conference, and a great day to be at the beach; but I did not lay out on the beach. . .I swam in the ocean in order to 'cross-train'!

The driving left me tired, though, and this morning I did not join my coaching group for a 15-miler as planned. I told myself that I would just go later in the day-- and went back to sleep for several hours.
So around 1 pm, I got dressed and headed out the door. The second I did, I knew I had made a huge mistake!! For some reason I had thought the weather was going to be cooler today. But it was HOT-- probably around 90-92 degrees. I made it through 5 miles and then decided I should call it quits.
I went to an evening worship service at Emmaus Way, an 'emerging church' in Durham that I had been wanting to try out for a while. (It begun as an offshoot of my church, the Chapel Hill Bible Church. )
Then I went to the student gym and did 6 more miles. . . a total of 11 today, not the 15 planned and not all at once. I'll plan to make up those 4 other miles during the week.

In other marathon-related news, a recent CBC revealed that i have iron-deficiency anemia again. . .so I have been taking iron supplements like crazy; I hope it makes a difference in time for the race.

Also, if you see me and wonder 'i know she's training for a marathon. . .but i could swear she looks less skinny than before. . .' -- well, it's true. who knew? some people (mostly women, from what I've read) do in fact get bigger while training for a marathon. i think it's mainly much more developed muscles, and also the fact that I feel hungrier even when perhaps I shouldn't be.
Here is an article to show that I am not alone.
